Spiced Mulled Wine

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine
  • 1 cup (200 grams) brown sugar
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
  • 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the red wine and brown sugar.
  2. Stir in the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, whole allspice berries, and grated nutmeg.
  3. Place the saucepan over low heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Meanwhile, cut a 6-inch square of cheesecloth and place the whole cloves and whole allspice berries in the center. Gather the corners of the cheesecloth and tie with kitchen string to create a spice bag.
  5. After the wine has simmered for 30 minutes, remove the spice bag and discard.
  6. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses and serve hot.
